In every face, there is a story waiting to be told. Life Up Close invites you to step into a world of vibrant individuality and raw authenticity. Captured using an off-camera flash and a wide-angle lens, these street portraits illuminate the essence of life’s extraordinary diversity. Each subject, whether adorned with colourful tattoos, expressive wrinkles, or bold fashion choices, represents a unique narrative that demands attention.
In cities across Europe and South Korea, Ralf enjoyed the beauty of spontaneous interactions with strangers, transforming them into one-day models. Through the interplay of light, shadow, and character, Life Up Close celebrates the unexpected connections that enrich the human experience and invites viewers to find inspiration in the diversity of life’s vibrant tapestry.
For this photo series, Ralf received an Honourable Mention at the PISPA-2024 Paris International Street Photography Awards. The photos were taken with a Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera, a wide-angle lens and an off-camera flash.
For this exhibition, Ralf returned to the JRC-Ispra, where he worked from 1998 to 2019 as a computational linguist, most recently in the Text Mining and Analysis Competence Centre. Find more information on his linguistic career here.
